California to Bora Bora: Route and Travel-Time Guide

Tahiti and French Polynesia travel scene

There are no direct flights from California to Bora Bora. The journey has two flights: a nonstop of about eight hours from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Tahiti-Faa’a (PPT), then a domestic flight of roughly 50 minutes to Bora Bora, followed by a short boat ride. The real question is how those pieces line up on your dates.

The journey, leg by leg

LegTypical time
Check-in and security at LAX or SFOAllow 3 hours for international
LAX or SFO to Papeete (nonstop)About 8 hours
Immigration, bags, walk to domestic check-inAllow 1.5 to 2 hours
Papeete to Bora BoraAbout 50 minutes nonstop
Boat from the airport motuAbout 15 minutes to Vaitape; resort boats vary

Flight times are averages from Tahiti Tourisme and its inter-island page. Some Bora Bora flights stop at another island on the way, which adds time, so check whether yours is nonstop.

Put together, a smooth same-day connection still means a long day: roughly 12 to 14 hours from leaving home to reaching your room, and more if the domestic flight is hours after you land.

Same-day connection or a night on Tahiti

California flights often arrive at Faa’a late in the evening or in the early hours, when there is no onward flight to Bora Bora until the morning. In that case a night near the airport is the practical choice, and many travellers prefer it even when a connection exists, because they arrive on Bora Bora rested and in daylight for the boat across the lagoon. See our Tahiti airport guide for the arrival process.

If you do connect the same day, give yourself a generous margin. The international and domestic tickets are usually separate, so the domestic airline is not obliged to hold or rebook you if the international flight is late. Air Tahiti and Air Moana list a checked allowance of 50 lb (about 23 kg), which may be less than what you flew in with.

Arriving at Bora Bora

Bora Bora’s airport sits on Motu Mute, a small island on the reef. Most resorts meet guests at the airport dock with their own boat. If you are staying on the main island, Air Moana runs a free shuttle boat for its passengers to Vaitape, about 15 minutes; Air Tahiti has run a similar boat for its own passengers. Confirm the transfer with your accommodation before you leave home. Our Bora Bora guide covers where to stay.

Time zones and the trip home

Tahiti keeps the same time as Hawaii all year. That puts it two hours behind California in winter and three hours behind when California is on daylight time, so jet lag is mild. The flight crosses the equator but not the date line, so you arrive on the same calendar day you leave, or the next morning after a late departure.

Going home, you usually fly Bora Bora to Papeete first, then on to California. Leave a buffer of several hours between the two flights, or stay a last night on Tahiti if the international flight leaves early in the day. Plan on roughly the same eight hours in the air on the way back.

Flying from elsewhere in the West

Seattle also has service to Papeete, and travellers from the Pacific Northwest or western Canada often route through Seattle, Los Angeles or San Francisco. Our guide to flights to Tahiti compares routings.

Two example timelines

Evening departure, overnight on Tahiti

You leave Los Angeles in the evening and land at Faa’a late that night local time. After immigration and bags, a short transfer takes you to an airport-area hotel. The next morning you take a mid-morning flight to Bora Bora and are at your resort by lunchtime. Total time from home to room is longer on paper, but you arrive rested and the domestic flight has plenty of margin.

Same-day connection

You land on Tahiti early in the day and have a domestic flight two to three hours later. That is enough for immigration, bags and the walk to domestic check-in if everything runs to time, and you reach Bora Bora in the early afternoon. If the international flight is an hour or two late, though, the connection is at risk, so this option works best with a later domestic flight or a ticket that protects the connection.

Either way, plan a quiet first afternoon. Most resorts cannot guarantee early check-in, so keep swimwear and sunscreen in your carry-on and use the time on the beach or by the pool.

Make the visit respectful

Keep essential medication and a change of clothes in your carry-on within airline rules, since checked bags sometimes miss tight connections. Follow crew and airport guidance during the transfer, and be patient at immigration, where several long-haul flights can arrive close together.

Common planning mistakes

Quoting one fixed travel time, booking the first morning flight to Bora Bora after an overnight arrival with no margin, and packing to the international baggage allowance instead of the domestic one.

Accessibility and individual needs

For children, older travellers or anyone who needs rest after an overnight flight, a Tahiti stopover makes the Bora Bora arrival much easier. Request wheelchair assistance separately with each airline, as the bookings are not linked, and ask the resort how passengers are helped on and off its boat.

After booking

In the days before departure, recheck both flight times, since a change to either can break the same-day connection.

On the day

If the domestic flight is missed, contact the airline and the Bora Bora accommodation right away so the boat transfer and first night can be rearranged.
