How to Get to Tahiti: Plan Flights, Transfers and Island Connections

Plan your trip

International visitors normally arrive through Tahiti-Faa’a International Airport near Papeete. Treat this as an itinerary-planning page, not a flight schedule: routes, carriers, transfer arrangements and entry requirements can change, so verify every booking directly before paying.

Plan the international arrival first

Tahiti Tourisme explains that international flights arrive at Tahiti-Faa’a International Airport (PPT). Use the official planning page to identify current arrival information, then confirm route availability, baggage rules, schedule changes and transit requirements with the airline serving your actual itinerary.

Allow time for an onward island connection

Travel beyond Tahiti can involve a domestic flight or sea transfer, depending on the island and current service. Keep each connection in your itinerary, allow realistic transfer time, and reconfirm conditions, luggage rules and departure details with the relevant airline, ferry or accommodation provider before travel.

Routes from Canada and North America

There are no nonstop flights from Canada to Tahiti, so Canadians connect through a gateway city. Los Angeles has had the most consistent nonstop service to Papeete, with San Francisco and Honolulu as the other usual options from North America; travellers from Europe usually connect through Paris and a North American stop, and travellers from the western Pacific come through Auckland or Tokyo. Carriers have both added and dropped US routes in recent seasons, so build the plan from a current schedule, not an old article. Our Tahiti flights guide compares the options.

GatewayTypical flight time to Papeete
Los AngelesAbout 8 hours
San FranciscoAbout 8 to 8½ hours
HonoluluAbout 5 hours
AucklandAbout 5 hours
TokyoAbout 11 hours
ParisAbout 22 hours including a stop

Times are averages published by Tahiti Tourisme and vary with the route and winds. When you connect in the United States, you clear US immigration and customs at the first US airport even if you are only changing planes, and you normally collect and recheck your bags. Leave a generous connection, and buy the Canada–US leg and the flight to Papeete on one ticket where you can. With separate tickets, the second airline has no obligation to rebook you if the first flight is late.

Arriving at Tahiti-Faa’a

Faa’a airport is about 5 km west of Papeete, close to most Tahiti hotels. Many long-haul flights land late at night or before dawn, so book your first hotel night from the arrival date if you want a room to go straight to. The terminal has a currency exchange office that opens around international arrivals and departures, an ATM, a tourist information counter, snack bars and a luggage storage counter. Taxis wait outside, but pre-booking a transfer is the calmer choice after a night flight; our airport transfers guide and Tahiti airport guide explain the options. All goods must be declared to customs on arrival, and biosecurity rules restrict bringing in plants, fruit and some foods.

Getting from Tahiti to the other islands

Two domestic airlines fly from Faa’a. Tahiti Tourisme notes that Air Tahiti serves 47 islands and atolls, while Air Moana flies to Moorea, Raiatea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa, Fakarava, Huahine, Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. Checked baggage on both is listed at 23 kg (50 lb), with an extra 5 kg (11 lb) for divers carrying their gear. If you are visiting several islands, a multi-island Air Tahiti pass can simplify the booking; our island-hopping guide suggests routes.

For a same-day connection, allow time for a late international arrival and the domestic check-in. Many travellers sleep one night on Tahiti and take a morning flight onward, which also leaves room for a delay on the long-haul leg.

Check entry rules separately

Entry requirements depend on passport nationality, purpose and length of travel. Read the territory-specific official guidance before booking non-refundable travel; this page does not make a visa or admission promise.

Frequently asked questions

Where do international trips to French Polynesia usually begin?

International arrivals generally use Tahiti as the gateway, after which travellers connect onward by the transport serving their chosen islands.

How much connection time should I allow?

Allow a realistic buffer for immigration, baggage, terminal changes and possible delays; confirm the actual connection requirements with the carriers involved.

Should I book island transfers before arrival?

For a fixed itinerary, confirm flights, ferries, cruise embarkation and accommodation transfers in advance because frequency and capacity vary.

Are there nonstop flights from Canada to Tahiti?

No. Canadians connect through a gateway such as Los Angeles, San Francisco or Honolulu, or through Asia, the Pacific or Europe, and clear US border control when connecting in the United States.

How do I get from Tahiti to Moorea?

Ferries cross from the Papeete ferry terminal in about 30 minutes several times a day, and there are also short flights. The terminal is a short taxi ride from the airport.
