Flights to Tahiti: How to Compare Routes and Fares

Every international flight to French Polynesia lands at Tahiti-Faa’a International Airport (PPT), about 5 km west of Papeete. From there, domestic flights or the Moorea ferry take you onward. Comparing flights well means looking at the whole chain, not just the fare to Papeete.

Where the flights come from

Tahiti Tourisme lists service from Paris, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Honolulu, Tokyo, Auckland and Rarotonga. Air Tahiti Nui, the national carrier, flies from Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo and Auckland, and several other airlines fly the North American routes. Carriers and seasonal routes do change, so check which airlines are operating for your dates rather than relying on an old route list.

FromAverage flight time to Papeete
Los Angeles or San FranciscoAbout 8 hours
HonoluluAbout 5 hours
AucklandAbout 5 hours
TokyoAbout 11 hours
ParisAbout 22 hours, with a stop

Times are Tahiti Tourisme’s averages. Tahiti is in the same time zone as Hawaii, so a flight from the West Coast crosses only two or three hours of time change.

Routing from Canada

There are no nonstop flights from Canada, so Canadian travellers connect. The usual choices are the US West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle), Honolulu, or for some, Auckland as part of a wider South Pacific trip. From Vancouver or Calgary a single West Coast connection is typical; from Toronto or Montreal you face a longer first leg, and some travellers break the journey with a night on the West Coast.

One ticket or two

Book the whole international journey on one ticket where you can. If a delayed first flight makes you miss the Tahiti flight, the airline is then responsible for rebooking you. With separate tickets, you carry that risk and must collect and recheck bags yourself. When connecting through the United States, you also clear US immigration and customs on the way through, which needs time.

The domestic leg

Air Tahiti and Air Moana tickets are usually separate from the international booking. Their checked allowance is listed at 50 lb (about 23 kg), which may be less than your international allowance, so pack to the lower figure. If you are visiting several islands, an Air Tahiti multi-island pass prices the domestic circuit as one fare.

How to compare fares fairly

Put each option side by side on the same terms: total elapsed time from your home airport, layover length, checked baggage, seat selection, change and cancellation rules, and the arrival time at Faa’a. A cheaper fare that lands after the last domestic flight costs a hotel night and a transfer, and one with a very short US connection may cost a missed flight.

Arrival time decides night one

Some arrivals connect the same day to Moorea or Bora Bora; late-night or pre-dawn landings usually mean a first night on Tahiti, which our Tahiti airport guide and airport transfers guide cover. On the way home, departures range from early morning to late at night; for a late one, ask about a late check-out or a day room.

Timing the booking

Tahiti Tourisme recommends booking international and domestic flights well in advance. The November to April season tends to bring more fare offers and better hotel availability, while school holidays fill flights early.

Combining Tahiti with another Pacific stop

Routings through Honolulu or Auckland make it easy to pair Tahiti with Hawaii or New Zealand on the same trip, and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands is about two and a half hours from Papeete. Air Tahiti passes can take a Rarotonga extension, which turns a long-haul journey into a two-country trip without another transpacific flight.

Arrival and departure at Faa’a

After landing you clear French Polynesian immigration and customs, then collect bags. The terminal has a currency exchange counter, a cash machine, a tourist information desk, snack bars and luggage storage, according to Tahiti Tourisme, which helps on a long layover before a domestic flight or a late departure. Domestic check-in for Air Tahiti is in the same airport complex, a short walk from international arrivals.

Faa’a is close to Papeete and many of Tahiti’s hotels, so a taxi or pre-booked transfer takes little time outside the weekday rush hours. Tahiti Tourisme suggests arranging airport transfers in advance through your travel agent or accommodation, which matters most for night arrivals.

Before departure

Allow extra time at check-in for the long-haul flight home, and arrive from another island with a comfortable margin, ideally on an earlier domestic flight than the last one of the day. If you are flying through the United States, check the connection time there too, since you will clear US immigration and recheck bags.

Make the visit respectful

Keep passports, essential medication and a change of clothes in your carry-on, and carry both electronic and offline copies of confirmations. At Faa’a you are often welcomed with a flower lei or tiare blossom and live music; take a moment for it, as it is part of the culture of welcome rather than a sales pitch.

Common planning mistakes

Treating a promotional fare as the trip cost, booking a domestic flight on the same morning as an overnight arrival with no margin, and assuming the domestic baggage allowance matches the international one.

Accessibility and individual needs

Ask the airline about seating together, infant fares, special meals and wheelchair assistance when booking rather than at the airport, and make the same requests separately to the domestic airline, since the bookings are not linked.

After booking

Watch for schedule-change notices from both airlines, and recheck that the domestic flight still leaves enough time after the international arrival.

On the day

If the international flight is delayed, contact the domestic airline and the first accommodation early, since rebooking an island connection can take time.
