Moorea vs Bora Bora: Which Island to Choose

Choose Bora Bora for the classic lagoon and overwater-bungalow stay, with Mount Otemanu as the backdrop and a trip built around the water. Choose Moorea for more variety, lower costs and easy access from Tahiti, with mountains, valleys and hiking alongside the lagoon.

For most first visits with at least seven nights, the honest answer is both: Moorea first, Bora Bora second. If you can only pick one, the comparison below covers the factors that decide it.

Cost: where the difference really comes from

In our experience, Bora Bora costs more than Moorea at almost every level, and the gap comes from more than the room rate:

  • Getting there. Moorea is a ferry ride from Papeete. Bora Bora needs a domestic flight each way, plus the boat transfer from the airport motu.
  • Meals. On a Bora Bora motu resort, you eat most meals at the hotel, because leaving means a boat. On Moorea, you can drive to snack stands, markets and local restaurants.
  • Choice of room. Moorea has many mid-range hotels and family guesthouses. On Bora Bora, the experience most people come for, an overwater bungalow, sits at the top of the price range.
  • Excursions. Lagoon tours on both islands are paid outings, but Moorea also offers free days: hiking, beaches and driving the coast road.

Scenery and the lagoon

French Polynesia island scenery

Bora Bora's lagoon is the headline. Tahiti Tourisme calls it a lagoon of 50 shades of blue and green, with motu scattered along the reef and Mount Otemanu rising from the centre. Seen from an overwater deck or a boat, it is the image most people have in mind when they think of French Polynesia.

Moorea's beauty is more vertical. The two deep bays, the pineapple fields climbing to the Belvédère lookout, the forests of mape (Tahitian chestnut) and the pierced mountain are the highlights, with a lagoon that is good for snorkelling and motu trips but less vast than Bora Bora's. Travellers who love mountains often prefer Moorea; travellers who love water colour usually prefer Bora Bora.

Pace and atmosphere

Moorea feels lived-in. Tahiti Tourisme describes it as the favourite weekend escape for Tahiti residents, and you share the coast road, beaches and shops with local families. That makes it relaxed and easy to explore independently, but less exclusive.

Bora Bora's pace is set by the resorts. Days follow the rhythm of hotel boats, lagoon excursions and time on your deck, which many couples find perfectly restful. Independent exploring is possible from the main island, where Vaitape has the island's banks and shops, open roughly 7 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday. If you stay on a motu, factor in boat schedules for every outing.

Getting around once you arrive

Moorea. You arrive at the Vaiare ferry dock or the airport at Temae. Tahiti Tourisme recommends arranging taxis and transfers when you book accommodation, since the public bus follows only the coast road and is not the most reliable way to get around. Car, scooter and bike rental are widely available, and a car turns Moorea into an easy self-drive island: a loop of the coast with stops at the bays, the lookout and the beaches fills a relaxed day.

Bora Bora. The airport and most hotels are on motu close to the main island, so every arrival starts with a boat. There is a shuttle boat between the airport and the main island, and hotels run their own shuttles. For most excursions, Tahiti Tourisme notes that the transfer from your hotel to the departure point is usually included in the price, but check when you book. On the main island, taxis, car and scooter rental are available for exploring Vaitape and Matira.

The practical difference is independence. Moorea rewards travellers who like to set their own schedule. Bora Bora works best when you are happy to let the hotel and tour operators handle the logistics.

Which island for which trip

  • Honeymoon, one island only: Bora Bora, if the budget allows a few nights over the water.
  • Honeymoon on a tighter budget: Moorea, with a resort overwater bungalow for part of the stay.
  • Families: Moorea, for kitchens, space, beaches you can drive to and a wider range of prices.
  • Active travellers and hikers: Moorea.
  • Snorkellers: either, with Bora Bora's lagoon tours slightly ahead for variety of stops.
  • Short stopover of two or three nights: Moorea, because the ferry avoids a domestic flight.
  • A once-in-a-lifetime lagoon view: Bora Bora.

Combining them is straightforward: three or four nights on Moorea, then three or four on Bora Bora, with a domestic flight in between. Starting on Moorea lets you recover from the long-haul flight somewhere easy before the splurge.

Bottom line

Decide what matters most, lagoon or landscape and budget, then pick the island, or split the week between both. Check how you will reach each one using Tahiti Tourisme's Moorea transport page and its Bora Bora transport page, and ask us to price both islands for your dates so you can compare like for like.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Bora Bora as a day trip from Moorea?

It is not practical. You would need flights both ways plus boat transfers, leaving very little time on the lagoon. Stay at least three nights.

Is the water clearer in Bora Bora than in Moorea?

Both have clear lagoons. Bora Bora's is larger and shows a wider range of colours, which is why its lagoon tours are so popular.
