Moorea Overwater Bungalows Compared

French Polynesia island scenery

On Moorea, overwater bungalows are offered by three resorts we could confirm from official sources: the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort on Temae beach in the east, facing Tahiti; the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa on the north coast at Papetoai; and the Manava Beach Resort & Spa in the Paopao district, near shops and services. The right choice depends mostly on which coast suits your plans and which way you want your deck to face.

Why choose Moorea for an overwater stay

Moorea is a short ferry ride or flight from Tahiti, so an overwater stay here does not need an extra domestic flight. It pairs lagoon time with mountains, two deep bays, viewpoints and inland drives, which makes it a good fit for travellers who want more than a few days on a deck. Rates are often lower than in Bora Bora, but not always, so compare like-for-like room categories. Our main overwater bungalows guide compares Moorea with the other islands.

Sofitel Kia Ora: east-facing, toward Tahiti

Tahiti and French Polynesia travel scene

According to Accor’s page for the resort, the Sofitel has 110 villas over the water, on the beach and in the gardens, and sits on the white-sand beach at Temae with views across the channel to Tahiti. Overwater villas come in two sizes, about 38 m² for the Superior categories and about 50 m² for the Luxury categories, and each size has a standard lagoon-view version and a “Horizon” version with an ocean or panoramic outlook.

Facing east means sunrise from your deck and Tahiti’s silhouette on the horizon. Accor describes the lagoon in front of the resort as protected and good for snorkelling. The location is also the most convenient on the island for the ferry and airport. Restaurants on site include a gourmet option and a second restaurant with weekly dance shows.

Hilton Moorea: north-coast lagoon setting

Tahiti Tourisme’s listing for the Hilton describes 104 bungalows set in gardens with lagoon views, a spa, pool, tennis, water sports and scuba diving, plus two rooms adapted for guests with reduced mobility. Hilton’s own French Polynesia page confirms overwater bungalows among its room types.

The resort sits at Papetoai, on the north coast that also holds Moorea’s two famous bays, so the Belvedere lookout, the Opunohu Valley and many lagoon tours are close by. Ask specifically which way each overwater category faces; on the north coast some decks look toward the reef and open sea, others back toward the peaks, and both are appealing for different reasons.

Manava: overwater with town convenience

Tahiti Tourisme’s listing for the Manava describes a property in Polynesian style with garden rooms, bungalows on stilts, beach bungalows and garden bungalows with private pools. The hotel says it stands on the site of the first hotel of the “Bali Hai Boys”, credited with inventing the overwater bungalow. It has a Polynesian restaurant, an all-day poolside restaurant, a spa, a fitness room, a dive club and the To’a Nui coral nursery, an ecological programme run since 2006, and it holds EarthCheck Silver certification.

Being close to shops is useful if you want to buy snacks and fruit or eat outside the resort sometimes. The resort is a good fit for travellers who want the overwater experience but also plan to explore independently by car or scooter. Check current rates for each category, as they vary by season and room position.

How to choose: coast, view and practicalities

Moorea is large enough that location shapes your days. A quick guide by coast:

  • East (Temae): sunrise, views of Tahiti, shortest transfers from the ferry and airport.
  • North (bays): closest to Cook’s Bay, Opunohu Bay, the Belvedere and many excursions.
  • Northwest (Tiahura): the sunset side; Tahiti Tourisme notes the sunsets at Les Tipaniers, a smaller hotel there without overwater rooms.

Questions to ask before booking any overwater room:

  • How deep is the water under the deck, and is the coral healthy enough for snorkelling straight from the ladder?
  • How far is the bungalow from the restaurant and pool, and is there buggy service?
  • Is it an end-of-pontoon unit for more privacy, or near the shore for easier access?
  • Does the category face the lagoon, open ocean, mountains or another row of bungalows?

Accessible rooms are few: Tahiti Tourisme lists two at the Hilton, three at the Sofitel and two at the Manava, and these are not necessarily overwater units, so request them early.

Other properties and status changes

Resort brands and inventories on Moorea change over time. The InterContinental Moorea on the northwest coast has offered overwater bungalows in the past, but it does not appear on Tahiti Tourisme’s current list of hotels in Moorea, so confirm its status with us before planning around it. The same list shows smaller hotels such as Hôtel Kaveka on Cook’s Bay, which offers bungalows on the bay and is a good-value base if overwater is not essential. Couples planning a honeymoon can compare Moorea with other islands in our Tahiti honeymoon resorts guide.

Bottom line

Pick the coast first: Sofitel for sunrise, Tahiti views and easy transfers; Hilton for the north-coast bays and excursions; Manava for overwater with shops and services close by. Then confirm the exact category, its orientation and its walking distance before you pay. See our Moorea guide for what to do around each base, and Far & Away Adventures can compare current rates across all three.

Frequently asked questions

Is Moorea cheaper than Bora Bora for overwater bungalows?

Often, but not always. Compare the same category, the same dates and the same meal plan, and include ferry or flight costs in the total.

Which Moorea overwater bungalows face Tahiti?

The Sofitel Kia Ora on Temae beach, on the east coast, looks across the channel toward Tahiti.

How many nights should I spend overwater on Moorea?

Three or four nights works for most couples. Some split the stay between a beach or garden room and an overwater room to manage the budget.
