Five days is enough for Tahiti and Moorea if you keep to those two islands and travel between them by ferry rather than plane. Spend three nights on Moorea for lagoon and valley time, and one or two on Tahiti at the start or end so your long-haul flight times don’t eat into the good days. Adding Bora Bora to a five-day trip usually costs a full day in transit, so save it for a longer visit.
Why Tahiti and Moorea work for a short trip
Every international flight lands at Tahiti-Faa’a International Airport, so Tahiti is unavoidable. Moorea is the only island you can reach without a second airport check-in: ferries leave from the Papeete waterfront several times a day, and Tahiti Tourisme gives the crossing as about 25 to 45 minutes. That makes it the most time-efficient pairing in French Polynesia.
The two islands also complement each other. Tahiti has the capital, the market, museums and a dramatic wild coast. Moorea is smaller and slower, with a 64 km road around the island, two famous bays, a lagoon full of rays and turtles, and walking trails into the Opunohu valley. You get town, culture, mountains and lagoon without packing more than twice.
Read our Tahiti guide and Moorea guide for the background on each island; this page is about fitting them into five days.
The plan at a glance
| Day | Where | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tahiti to Moorea | Arrive, ferry across if timing allows, settle in |
| 2 | Moorea | Island drive, Belvedere viewpoint, Opunohu valley |
| 3 | Moorea | Lagoon excursion with snorkelling stops and a motu picnic |
| 4 | Moorea to Tahiti | Free morning, afternoon ferry, Papeete evening |
| 5 | Tahiti | Market, round-island drive, late-night flight home |
This order puts the island-hopping at the start, when you have energy, and leaves Tahiti for the end, when you need to be close to the airport. If your flight home leaves in the morning rather than late at night, reverse it: one night on Tahiti first, then three on Moorea, then a last night near the airport.
Day 1: Arrival and the crossing

Long-haul arrival times vary. If you land in daylight with a few hours to spare, take a taxi or pre-booked transfer to the Papeete ferry terminal and cross the same day. Aremiti asks passengers to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure; do the same whichever operator you use, and check the last sailing of the day for your date.
If you land late at night, stay near the airport or in Papeete and take a morning ferry. You lose nothing: the island day you planned on Tahiti can move to Day 5. What wastes time is landing exhausted and trying to make a tight ferry connection with full luggage.
- Buy ferry tickets online or at the terminal. Our Tahiti to Moorea ferry guide covers operators, fares and luggage limits.
- On Moorea, rent a car or arrange a transfer from the Vaiare ferry dock in advance so someone is waiting when you arrive.
- Choose a north or north-west coast stay if you want the bays and the main lagoon sites close by.
Days 2 and 3: Moorea’s valley and lagoon
Day 2: The island by road
Drive the coast road at an easy pace. Tahiti Tourisme’s Moorea short-break page suggests stopping at the Moorea Tropical Garden for a fruit juice and the view, then driving up to the Belvedere at Opunohu for the panorama over Mount Rotui, Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. On the way down, Te Fare Natura, the ecomuseum at the entrance to the valley, explains the area’s culture and biodiversity, and signposted trails lead to the remains of ancient marae among the pineapple fields and banyan trees.
Finish on the south-west coast in the late afternoon for sunset. The southern side of the island is the least developed, which is part of its appeal.
Day 3: A day on the water
Book a full or half-day lagoon excursion. Typical trips stop to swim with rays and blacktip reef sharks, visit turtle areas and finish with a motu picnic of local dishes. Temae beach on the north-east coast is good for swimming among the coral on your own. From July to November, a licensed whale-watching outing is a worthwhile swap.
Keep the lagoon trip on Day 3 rather than Day 4. If wind cancels it, you can move it to the next morning.
Days 4 and 5: Back to Tahiti
Day 4: An easy morning, an afternoon ferry
Enjoy a last swim or paddle, check out, and catch an early afternoon ferry. Stay in Papeete or near the airport. For dinner, the food trucks (roulottes) at Place Vaiete on the Papeete waterfront are a relaxed, inexpensive local option.
Day 5: Market and round-island drive
Start early at the Papeete market, where Tahiti Tourisme recommends going in the morning for crafts from all the archipelagos, fruit, fresh fish and local snacks. Then drive around the island:
- West coast: the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands, a swim at the PK18 public beach facing Moorea, Marae Arahurahu, and the Mara’a grotto.
- South: the Vaipahi water gardens, then the peninsula of Tahiti Iti, where you can look out toward the Teahupo’o wave.
- East coast: the wilder side, with the three waterfalls, the blowhole (most impressive in a rough sea) and black-sand surf beaches.
- Finish: sunset at Venus Point before returning toward the airport.
If your flight leaves late at night, book a day-use room or keep your Day 4 room for a late check-out so you can shower and repack. Our Faa’a airport guide explains the departure process.
Common mistakes on a five-day trip
- Adding a third island. A Bora Bora add-on means a domestic flight each way plus the boat transfer from its airport motu. On five days, that often leaves only one full lagoon day there.
- Booking Moorea for the night you land. If your flight is delayed, you miss the last ferry and pay for a room you never use.
- Leaving Tahiti until the last minute. A round-island day on Tahiti is worth doing; a night near the airport also protects you from a missed flight.
- Overpacking the days. Keep one afternoon on Moorea free. Showers and wind can shift plans at any time of year.
Planning notes
Fix your international flight times first, then decide whether Tahiti goes at the start or the end. Book the Moorea stay and one lagoon excursion early, and buy ferry tickets once your dates are firm. If you have seven days rather than five, our seven-day French Polynesia plan shows how to add a second island. We can build the five days around your flight times when you plan with us.
Frequently asked questions
Is five days too short for Tahiti?
Not if you stay on Tahiti and Moorea. Both are linked by a short ferry crossing, so you spend your time on the islands rather than in airports.
Should I fly or take the ferry to Moorea?
For most visitors the ferry is simpler. It leaves from central Papeete several times a day and avoids a second airport check-in.
Do I need a car on Moorea?
It helps. A rental car or scooter lets you drive the coast road and reach the Belvedere at your own pace. Otherwise, book guided tours with hotel pick-up.
